Helmut Sinn

In 1961, in Frankfurt am Main, former Luftwaffe pilot Helmut Sinn founded a company dedicated to manufacturing navigation watches and chronographs for pilots. More than six decades later, Sinn watches have traveled to space, the ocean floor, the stratosphere, and the North Pole, proving time and again that Swiss technology does not hold a monopoly on precision. Under the leadership of Lothar Schmidt since 1994, Sinn Spezialuhren has established the world’s first technical standard for pilot’s watches (TESTAF / DIN 8330) and has developed proprietary technologies that are now emulated throughout the industry.

Helmut Sinn founded the company in Frankfurt

Helmut Sinn, a former Luftwaffe pilot during World War II and a flight instructor specializing in blind navigation, founded Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren in Frankfurt am Main. From the very beginning, the company’s core business has been navigation watches and pilot’s chronographs.

The 140 S Chronograph, into space

German physicist Reinhard Furrer wore a Sinn 140 S on his wrist during the Spacelab D-1 mission, demonstrating that the rotor of a mechanical automatic movement functions in zero gravity. Sinn has secured its place in the history of space exploration.

Lothar Schmidt acquires the company

On September 1, certified engineer Lothar Schmidt acquires Sinn and initiates a comprehensive strategic reorganization. The company is renamed Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH. The first model of the new era is the titanium 244 with anti-magnetic protection, far exceeding the requirements of the DIN standard.

Introducing the Mission Timers EZM 1 and EZM 2

Sinn presents the first Einsatzzeitmesser (Mission Timers): the EZM 1 for the ZUZ special customs unit, and the EZM 2 for the GSG 9 maritime unit. Watches stripped down to the absolute essentials, where readability and precision can mean the difference between life and death.

The Frankfurt Financial District Watch

Sinn launches the first Frankfurt Financial District Watch, model 6000. For the first time, a Sinn dial bears the inscription “Frankfurt am Main.” This watch marks the beginning of a legacy that continues to this day, inextricably linked to the city where the company is headquartered.

German submarine steel divers

Sinn is the first watch brand to certify its diving watches in accordance with European standards for diving equipment (Germanischer Lloyd, now DNV). That same year, Sinn pioneered the use of German submarine-grade steel for its watch cases, giving rise to the U series, which is still in production today.

At 0857 UTC, TESTAF was at an altitude of 41,419 meters

American Robert Alan Eustace skydived from an altitude of 41,419 meters, breaking Felix Baumgartner’s record. He wore a Sinn 857 UTC TESTAF integrated into his suit. Despite temperatures of -77 °C and breaking the sound barrier, the watch functioned flawlessly. Today, it is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

DIN 8330: The world's first standard for pilot's watches

For the first time in decades, the German Institute for Standardization has published a new watchmaking standard: DIN 8330, based on the TESTAF technical standard that Sinn helped develop in 2012 in collaboration with the University of Aachen. The new standard systematically defines the technical requirements that a genuine pilot’s watch must meet: readability, resistance to vibrations, and resistance to cockpit fluids.

Beyond the sky, beyond the ocean

At 08:57 UTC, TESTAF accompanied Robert Alan Eustace on his jump from the stratosphere at an altitude of 41,419 meters. The 140 S performed flawlessly in zero gravity with Professor Furrer. The Mission Timer EZM is used by GSG 9 and the KSK. The U16 is made from steel from the submarine of the same name. The Romerberg branch is located in a historic building next to Frankfurt City Hall. Sinn Spezialuhren is not just a brand: it is a statement of intent.
